CONFERENCE THEME: LOCAL STORIES

The theme for the 2008 AFN Conference is 'Pushing the Boundaries: Facilitation Frontiers'.

This encompasses all the ways in which facilitation practice may push boundaries: for the facilitator, for the group(s), for society as a whole.

The frontiers relate to any place where facilitation is at the forefront or cutting edge of reaching and engaging people, and supporting people to work together for better social, cultural and environmental outcomes.

The choice of Bathurst as the site for the Conference reflects this theme, with a number of local stories casting light on people and endeavours which push the boundaries and new frontiers to create new opportunities.

Follow the links below to read about:

The Bathurst Copperwing - how community engagement has helped to bring a butterfly back from the brink of extinction to become an icon

Crossing the Mountains - how the long-awaited crossing of the Blue Mountains saved the colony from starvation and opened up the inland of the Australian continent

Windradyne and 'The Black War' - how a clash of cultures between white settlers and Aboriginal people led to war, atrocities and a reconciliation

The Great Australian Gold Rush - how one discovery led to many discoveries and transformed colonial society

Chifley and 'The Light on the Hill' - how a man of modest beginnings rose to the highest office in the nation

Mount Panorama - how a motor race track created cult legends and continues to affect all Australian drivers
