The
Conference seeks to be 'people centred - planet conscious'. As part of this, we are paying a different level
of attention to the health & wellbeing of participants
by working for a health promoting event, which:
- is an inclusive event that encourages
and supports diverse community participation
- promotes and models healthy behaviours
and presents healthy choices as easy choices for everyone.
In
collaboration with Charles Sturt University, the Conference is employing
the following strategies:
Inclusiveness
Increased inclusion is fostered through
concessional costing, low cost activities, and availability of sponsorship
of attendance for participants requiring financial assistance, or from
marginalised communities.
A range
of local community organisations and community members e.g. Indigenous
groups, people from diverse cultural backgrounds, people with disabilities,
are invited to participate in aspects of the event.
For more information see Indigenous Engagement
Opportunities
are provided for participants to donate some time to the local community,
before, during or after the Conference. This may consist of designing
and facilitating a session (or sessions) for a community organisation (or
organisations).
Healthy
Nutrition
Unhealthy
food choices such as fried and highly processed food are limited.
Food menus incorporate seasonal, and organically grown foods
wherever possible, with meal choices for coeliac, vegetarian and
vegan participants.
A complete list of ingredients of meals is available
on request.
Stress Minimisation
The organisers are seeking to have available massage, tai-chi, yoga
and meditation activities for participants.
Physical Activity
The organisers are seeking to have available
a range of low-impact walking activities.
Community participation is encouraged by inviting local community
groups to give demonstrations of different forms of activity.
Paths are checked to ensure they are clear and safe for people
to walk around freely and comfortably.
Distances around the venue are marked so that participants
can measure how far they’ve walked.
Health promoting literature is available for participants to
take home.
Pit Stop (news) segments keep participants informed of the
program of activities and remind about the importance of physical
activity.
Workshop presenters are reminded about the importance of physical activity
and requested to incoprorate this into their design.
Smoke free Environment
Every effort is made to have a smoke free event, with clear
delineation of smoking areas well away from main gathering points and
air intakes.
Cigarette butt bins are provided in smoking areas.
SunSmart
Maximum use is made of shade from trees, buildings and other
structures when participants are gathering.
In promotional material, participants
are encouraged to bring hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
Pit Stop (news) segments remind participants
about the importance of sun protection.
Sunscreen
is readily available in bulk dispensers, and promoted to participants.
Injury
Prevention & Safe Behaviours
A first aid kit is available at the Registration Desk with clear
signage, and a trained First Aid Officer is nominated at all times.
Participants are reminded to wear appropriate clothing and
footwear to prevent injuries, to bring insect repellent, and to be
aware of snakes in the grounds of the venue when walking.
Fresh water is freely available, so
that people can stay hydrated. This
includes events where alcohol may be consumed.
For events where alcohol is available, information is provided
on safe levels of consumption and options for transport.
Offers from sponsors or exhibitors related to products with
potential to conflict with positive health messages are declined.
