As
part of the Conference Healthy Community policy,
we
are working for an inclusive event that encourages and supports diverse
community participation.
In particular, Indigenous people are being encouraged to participate in
aspects of the event. In part this reflects the well established relationship
between our venue Charles Sturt University and local Wiradjrui people, and
the University's commitment to ensuring a prominent and enduring recognition
of Indigenous culture on campus.
In addition, the incorporation of Indigenous cultural strands throughout
the Conference reflects a new spirit of reconciliation in Australia following
the long-awaited apology to the Stolen Generations by the Prime Minister in
February 2008. This heartfelt and authentic apology, and the gracious
manner in which it has been accepted, have opened the way for a more socially
just nation.
The organisers are developing proposals for a series of activities which
draw from Indigenous culture, to be presented throughout the Conference program.
We are
enthusiastic about providing participants in this 'Conference in the Bush'
with an authentic Indigenous cultural experience.
This
will start with a special Welcome to Country as part of the Conference Opening
event on Wed 26 November.
Additional Indigenous cultural activities and events will be listed here
as they are confirmed.
